  • In Cold Blood Truman Capote

A window into "American Violence." It says that somewhere on the back cover of this book. I hated it at first. I had to read the opening for a creative writing class and found it to be too wordy. But I came back to it, reading it before shifts at Dogfish Head. For a short while, this book was the only thing I cared about. So I shredded it with notes, bent its pages, and destroyed its spine. Capote is incredible.

  • Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil John Berendt

My favorite book. It hasn't aged too well but it's still an absolute must-read. It's as moody as it's cover.

  • Let Us Now Praise Famous Men James Agee, Walker Evans

Honestly. I think James Agee is unbearable. But every now and again, there's just a moment that makes the whole book worth it. I think this is the best -- when you have nothing to do -- and you're sick of looking at your phone.

  • Hold Still Sally Mann
